Xolos had never made the playoffs before. But had a very successful season finishing in seventh place. They were the underdogs heading into this match. Both teams had several excellent scoring opportunities throughout the match, and Xolo’s top scorer Renae Cuellar had a couple during the first half. One of those clear opportunities was when she hit the ball wide over the net on a one on one with the goalkeeper in the penalty area. Xolos goalkeeper and team captain Itzel Gonzalez also played an essential role with several crucial saves in the clash.
Tigres best scoring opportunity came in the 57th minute as Gonzalez almost put the ball into her own net after deflecting a shot off a free kick. The last opportunity for the Tijuanenses came in the 82nd minute as Isabel Fonseca almost scored a wonderful goal off a corner kick, but the ball smashed into the post. Despite the scoreless game it proved to be an intense encounter. Xolos will now need to defeat the felines in the second leg. Tigres have won before, and they will not give up so easily.
