With winning Group B they ascended to League A of nations, finishing as its group leader. They also secured a spot in the 2021 Gold Cup. The Dominicans started with great momentum, and scared the hosts at the Cuscatlán Stadium in the capital. But “La Selecta” demonstrated to have control of the game and after 15 minutes the first goal came. What a GOLAZO it was from Juan Carlos Portillo, with a short distance shot from the left flank in between several rival defenders. The hosts kept doing their thing, and protecting the goal in favor they had, going into halftime with a 1-0.
In the second half another goal came in the 87th minute, in a counterattack that was culminated by Pablo Punyed, who came in as a sub in the final stretch of the match. The League of Nations is a new regional tournament, that’s particularly important for El Salvador, Canada, Curaçao, and Panama. These teams sought to earn points, and climb the FIFA ladder. The positions in this tournament will also be taken into consideration when selecting the countries that will play the CONCACAF elimination hex for the Qatar World Cup. At the end of the competition, El Salvador occupies the sixth box, above Canada, Curaçao, and Panama who appear below. The three teams aim to continue adding everything they can in their official commitments and in friendly matches to be in the decisive round of the regional tie.
