The opening weekend was nothing short of spectacular, featuring record-breaking performances, historic debuts, and standout individual achievements.

The inaugural matchday shattered previous records, with a total of 46 goals scored across 15 matches, averaging over three goals per game. This impressive feat surpasses the prior record of 41 goals in 12 matches set in 2019, highlighting the league’s offensive evolution. Teams like Columbus Crew, Philadelphia Union, San Jose Earthquakes, and Vancouver Whitecaps each netted four goals, showcasing their attacking prowess. Notably, San Jose Earthquakes dominated Real Salt Lake with a 4-0 victory, while Vancouver Whitecaps triumphed 4-1 over Portland Timbers. These high-scoring encounters underscore the competitive spirit and entertainment value that fans can anticipate throughout the season.  

San Diego FC’s Historic Debut

San Diego FC, the league’s 30th franchise, made a remarkable entrance by defeating the defending MLS Cup champions, LA Galaxy, 2-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park. Danish winger Anders Dreyer etched his name in the history books by scoring both goals, including the club’s inaugural goal in the 52nd minute, assisted by fellow Designated Player Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano. Dreyer sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal, showcasing the team’s offensive prowess. Head coach Mikey Varas expressed pride in his squad’s performance, emphasizing their winning mentality and the successful implementation of their preseason strategies.  

Atlanta United’s Electrifying Performance

Atlanta United commenced their season with a dramatic 3-2 win over CF Montréal at a packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium, attended by 65,520 enthusiastic fans. This impressive turnout marked the third-largest crowd for a soccer match worldwide on that day, trailing only European giants Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. Emmanuel Latte Lath, the club’s record signing, made an immediate impact by netting two goals in his debut. The Ivorian striker demonstrated his aerial prowess with a first-half header and capitalized on a loose ball in the box for his second. The match reached its climax when returning club legend Miguel Almirón provided a decisive assist to Edwin Mosquera, who delivered a stunning game-winning goal. Head coach Ronny Deila lauded the team’s performance and the electrifying atmosphere, likening it to a “rock concert.”

LAFC’s Narrow Triumph

Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Minnesota United FC at BMO Stadium. The match remained goalless until the 78th minute when striker Jeremy Ebobisse unleashed a left-footed shot from the edge of the box, finding the upper left corner and clinching the win. This goal not only secured three points for LAFC but also marked the first goal of the 2025 MLS season. Ebobisse, an offseason acquisition, has quickly endeared himself to the LAFC faithful with his decisive play.

FC Cincinnati’s Promising Start

FC Cincinnati began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls, thanks to a debut goal from their club-record signing, Kévin Denkey. The Togolese striker headed in a long ball from DeAndre Yedlin, becoming the sixth player in club history to score in their MLS debut. Head coach Pat Noonan praised Denkey’s knack for seizing critical moments, highlighting his potential to be a game-changer for the team.

Inter Miami’s Eventful Draw

Inter Miami, led by global superstar Lionel Messi, began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against New York City FC. Messi showcased his playmaking abilities by providing two assists, underscoring his continued influence in the league. Despite not securing a win, the match highlighted Inter Miami’s attacking potential and set the stage for an exciting season ahead.

Chicago Fire’s Brian Gutiérrez delivered an impressive performance, scoring two goals in a 4-2 loss to Columbus Crew, marking the first brace of his career. His efforts earned him a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday, reflecting his growing influence in the league.

Additionally, Vancouver Whitecaps’ Jayden Nelson stole the show with a standout performance, contributing three assists and a goal in their commanding 4-1 victory over Portland Timbers. Nelson’s dynamic playmaking abilities were on full display, signaling a promising season ahead for the young talent.
