In a commanding display at BMO Stadium, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) secured a 3-0 victory over Columbus Crew in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16. This triumph not only provided a significant advantage ahead of the return fixture but also marked a moment of redemption for LAFC, who had previously suffered notable defeats to Columbus in past competitions. For their star forward, Denís Bouanga, it also was his breakthrough moment after four straight matches without a goal to his name.

The match commenced with both teams exhibiting tactical discipline, but it was LAFC who seized the initiative. In the 20th minute, forward Denis Bouanga capitalized on a defensive lapse by Columbus defender Steven Moreira. Intercepting an errant back pass, Bouanga showcased his composure by rounding goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and calmly slotting the ball into the net, giving LAFC an early lead.   

Columbus attempted to respond, with Diego Rossi finding space in the attacking third. However, his effort sailed over the crossbar, reflecting the Crew’s struggles to convert possession into tangible opportunities. Despite maintaining 68% possession and completing over double the passes of their opponents, Columbus lacked the incisiveness required in the final third.  

The second half began disastrously for the visitors. Just seconds after the restart, Bouanga struck again. Receiving the ball on the left wing, he cut inside and unleashed a curling right-footed shot that kissed the underside of the crossbar before nestling into the net. This spectacular goal not only doubled LAFC’s advantage but also underscored Bouanga’s attacking prowess.

“It was great to see Denis enjoy his football again. And when he does that, then things click. And so, I think the goals were really important for him,” LAFC’s head coach Steve Cherundolo said afterwards.

Columbus’s defense appeared rattled, and LAFC sought to exploit this vulnerability. Bouanga continued to menace, forcing Schulte into a crucial save in the 68th minute to deny him a hat-trick. The relentless pressure from the home side highlighted the gulf in sharpness between the two teams on the night. 

In the 81st minute, LAFC extended their lead further. A corner from Bouanga was partially cleared by the Crew defense, only for substitute Nathan Ordaz to connect with a first-time volley, sending the ball into the roof of the net. This marked Ordaz’s inaugural goal in the Champions Cup and effectively sealed the match in favor of the hosts.  

Columbus’s woes were compounded by their inability to penetrate LAFC’s resolute defense. Despite their dominance in possession, the Crew managed only a single shot on target. The departure of key attacking players, including Cucho Hernández’s recent transfer to Real Betis, was evident as Columbus struggled to pose a significant threat upfront.  

LAFC’s defensive solidity was epitomized by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who recorded his fourth consecutive clean sheet across all competitions. The veteran shot-stopper’s organization of the backline ensured that Columbus’s attempts were thwarted, maintaining the team’s impeccable defensive record.  

This victory holds particular significance for LAFC, considering their historical challenges against Columbus. Past encounters had seen the Crew emerge victorious in critical matches, including the 2023 MLS Cup and the 2024 Leagues Cup. The emphatic nature of this win serves as a cathartic moment for LAFC, symbolizing a turning point in this burgeoning rivalry.  

For Columbus, the defeat was a stark contrast to their promising start in the MLS season. Having secured two wins in as many games, the Crew entered the match with optimism. However, the lack of attacking depth and defensive frailties were laid bare, necessitating a reassessment ahead of the second leg.  

Looking ahead, Columbus faces a daunting task in overturning the three-goal deficit. The return leg at Lower.com Field will require a performance of exceptional caliber, with the Crew needing to address their offensive shortcomings and defensive lapses to mount a credible comeback. 

Conversely, LAFC will aim to maintain their momentum, leveraging their advantage to secure progression in the tournament. The team’s cohesive display, marked by clinical finishing and defensive resilience, positions them favorably as they seek to advance further in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
